A bill in the state legislature proposed by Gov. George Pataki closes a loophole in the state's do-not-call registry, giving people who join the list more protection from telemarketers.

SECURITY BREACH HITS HSBC'S MASTERCARD CREDIT CARDS
British financial giant HSBC PLC (HBC) is notifying at least 180,000 people who used MasterCard credit cards to make purchases at Polo Ralph Lauren Corp. ( RL) that criminals may have obtained access to their credit-card information, and that they should replace their cards, Thursday's Wall Street Journal reported.

HSBC ACTS ON CARD SNAFU
As many as 187,000 GM MasterCard customers may have potentially had their personal information exposed, officials with card issuer HSBC Holdings said Wednesday.

FTC, CALIFORNIA ATTORNEY GENERAL SEEK HALT TO ILLEGAL SPAM OPERATION
The Federal Trade Commission and the Attorney General of California have asked a U.S. District Court Judge to order a halt to an operation that sent millions of illegal spam messages touting mortgage loans and other products and services. The agencies charge that the operation violates federal and state laws, and have asked the court to freeze the defendants' assets pending trial and order a permanent halt to the illegal spamming.

FTC TESTIFIES ON SECURITY OF CONSUMERS' FINANCIAL DATA
FTC Chairman Deborah Platt Majoras today told the Senate Judiciary Committee that despite the fact that data brokers may provide a valuable service both to business and government entities, "There are concerns about the aggregation of sensitive consumer information and whether this information is protected adequately from misuse and unauthorized disclosure. In particular, recent security breaches have raised questions about whether sensitive consumer information collected by data brokers may be falling into the wrong hands, leading to increased identity theft and other frauds."

ANNOUNCED ACTIONS FOR APRIL 12, 2005
Commission authorization of the staff to file amended complaints: The Commission has authorized the staff to file an amended complaint in the matter currently pending against Capital Acquisition & Management Company (CAMCO). In December 2004, staff of the FTC's Midwest Region filed a complaint in U.S. district court against CAMCO and several other defendants alleging violations of Section 5 of the FTC Act and the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) in connection with their debt-collection practices.

LEXISNEXIS ACKNOWLEDGES MORE ID THEFT
LexisNexis, which compiles and sells personal and financial data on U.S. consumers, said Tuesday that personal information on 310,000 people nationwide may have been stolen.
That number is nearly 10 times higher than the figure LexisNexis disclosed last month when it first reported that its databases had been breached.

NEW DELHI, India--Police have arrested former employees of an Indian call center that handles U.S. customer accounts for allegedly stealing consumers' funds. The suspected gang members arrested by police in Pune included three ex-workers of Mphasis BPO.
